Commentary: While I will of course grouse about the price, as I must play the hits, I also quite like Chopper (C1-10P in Mining Facility Disguise). It's an existing mold, in a color I pretty much forgot about, despite remembering a lot from the "In the Name of the Rebellion" episodes. He's in part 2, and unlike the Imperial disguise I didn't remember the normally orange Chopper's yellow makeover until I saw the figure. I've seen this color scheme on other toys, as it looks a lot like various caution signs and an old Imaginext robot I had on hand. He has a yellow body with black and gray highlights, making the figure look like a completely new droid. If Disney wants to give me bright new colors on a mold that make it look different from my other droids, I'm going to be a lot more chipper about wasting $33 or so to ship one to my house.

The markings all match closely. The orange on the sides of the dome are actually lights, not just an orange stripe, so that doesn't look quite right - but everything else is pretty much on the mark. You don't get panel lines, but at least the sculpted panels look pretty good and I guess you could add your own grime wipe if you're the kind of person who still has the time and drive to customize your toys. I'm leaving it pristine.

There's a lot of extra paint on this one. Not only is the top of his dome silver, but the little dish has painted black panels on top. We haven't seen that on other Chopper figures. It's distinctive, making this the kind of figure you could have in a background on a shelf or in a playset to mix things up a bit.

Construction is the same as the other Disney Chopper figures, with jointed dome-arms, ankles, a rotating wheel leg, plus that pop-out claw arm. If you've bought another one, you know what to expect. Joints are generally tight, with a dome that swivels more easily than some other astromechs. I especially appreciate the black wheels. You'll probably never bother to look at them, but they pop nicely.

The figure includes the core body for RX-01, which I assume you will build out between now and December. He takes up about 1/3 of the figure's bubble. The cardback on my sample was thicker, but with some of the worst non-bootleg printing I've seen in a while. The text appears more fuzzy than usual, perhaps it's a color alignment issue. Even the portrait on the front looked a little rough.

If you're a Chopper completist, this is a decent one. It appears on an actual episode, and it brings us the mold in new colors. That's about as good as one can expect these days. I wouldn't recommend it at premium eBay pricing, but it's charming enough and different enough to warrant blowing a few bucks.

Commentary: Is there any figure as satisfying as the sensible repaint? Chopper (Imperial Disguise) was a figure I expected us to see when the show was still running, because Hasbro loves a repaint. Well, we finally got him about a year ago - they took the basic droid body, removed an accessory, reduced the paint a bit, and gave us something new. The orange dome is now black with red, and looks great. The body is mostly unpainted, which matches the show. Typical Chopper figures have lots of painted panels and cables, while this one keeps it plain.

He has an alternate radar dish, and I'd have been fine if they left it out. I don't know where to store it, and it's going to get lost - but I guess you have an option if you want a tilted dish.

Articulation is really nice. The ankles move, the wheel sort of turns, the third leg pops out, but what's really exciting is the dome. This figure can spin and tilt in any direction, mimicking his ability in the cartoon. Each arm is jointed at the dome, but not at the "wrist" or "eblow" like Disney's exclusive version of the robot. Since a proper Chopper in these colors doesn't exist in Disney's mold, though, it's moot - you're going to want to get this one. It's also worth noting Hasbro's Chopper mold also has a flip-out arm in the body, with a dark grey interior behind it.

Is it perfect? No. Is it as good as you're going to get? Probably. Hasbro left the back of Imperial Chopper's body nearly completely unpainted, and also neglected to paint the cables on the back of his feet. The animation model doesn't seem to have cables, but the live action one does - so maybe that's why they skipped them here. It's too much work for a repaint, even if it's a repaint of a short figure that probably could have stood to not be full price. But if you want 3 3/4-inch scale Chopper in these colors, this is your one option.

Even if you don't like the show, this is a neat figure - the coloring matches the panels and rooms on the first Death Star. If we ever get a Death Star playset again, this would be good hall filler. (I would like a Retro one, too.) I'd recommend getting this one since he's still at (or under) original retail price.

Commentary: I took a while to open Chopper, or C1-10P on the box. The reason I was in no rush is because Hasbro hade more coming, and Disney made several, and also I was more curious about how the set woudl look in the distant future of 22 months later. And here we are! The mold for this 2024 figure comes from 2017 C1-10p "Chopper" [FOTD #2,385] and that mold has been reused a few times for holiday, pride, Mickey, and other purposes. It's a good design and before Hasbro did their The Vintage Collection version, arguably the best you could get at this size. Today, I'd say it's acceptable.

The Chopper model on TV has changed a bit since the cartoon, with panel sizes altered a bit and their placements changed. An off-center tilted square is corrected on Ahsoka, but is still askew on this mold. The colors are good, with different panel coloring than the cartoon models. They're more in line with the TV show, but not as good as Hasbro's nor are they perfect. You don't get the weathering, and the metallic bits are more of a matte finish. The wires are more subtle, and the articulation isn't as good. But it's a lot cheaper - SRP on this set was a mere $12.50 a figure, versus Hasbro's $16.99 per. It's even cheaper on eBay now, because it didn't sell through at full price.

This Disney Chopper has a mismatched left foot, which doesn't match the show. But it does have a brown box painted in front of the right leg, which Hasbro left off. It's interesting to see which designers keep and lose various details, because neither is 100% correct. There are many nits to pick. This mold is also larger than Haasbro's, so I assume you'll probably just want to get theirs for the superior paint and extra accessories. Heck, Hasbro's got a dome that can tilt like it does on the show, while Disney's only swivels. Unlike Huyang, there's a clear winner - and this probably isn't it. It's not a bad figure. I like the jointed dome arms, and the flip-out claw in the chest. It's just an old mold that has since been supplanted. You will most likely get one as part of the 4-pack, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you're a Chopper completist.

Commentary: Arguably a big, exciting improvement! Chopper (C1-10P) is a new figure of a familiar face, which is what I find to be the most exciting thing about Star Wars: The Retro Collection. I love the format so much, even a lesser figure is elevated! But we'll get to them later. Today I'm here to talk droids, because I was delighted to see how this one would turn out. Hasbro's packaging is still, sadly, quite thin but they did really tone down the ugly fake "shelf battle damage" markings, with only a few unsightly white splotches. The "Retro Collection Kollektion Colleccion Serie" sticker is, sadly, still there and costing Hasbro money for an element fans don't actually want. "Drop the package sticker already" is what I'm saying.  Go ahead and pocket that penny or two.  You deserve it.

As soon as I got this guy off the cardback I ran to my 1983 Y-Wing Fighter to see if he fit in the R2-D2 droid socket. He doesn't - the feet are a little too wide. I'm surprised! I mean, I'm not surprised that Hasbro didn't test a 2023 figure against a 1983 ship - that's just silly to expect unless you're LEGO, or Playmobil, or maybe Hot Wheels.  I didn't anticipate he wouldn't be the same dimensions as R2-D2 and R5-D4. He does, however, fit in the Y-Wing Scout "Mini-Rig" from Rebels and The Clone Wars... and fits best if you have the one with the booster seat. His dome does indeed click, and there's a little screw under the body holding it in place, just like R2-D2. You have to pull out the removable third leg to see it. He has no problems standing up, and that third leg is a snug fit - that's how you want it. As a toy, it's a lot of fun to fidget with him and I don't think there are any other features you could reasonably ask for out of a 1980s-style Chopper Kenner figure. This is it, they nailed it.

But how accurate is(n't) it? Also perfect! Getting it wrong is getting it right. Hasbro dropped the dome arms, as I suspect Kenner would have. The legs are different, but not very different. The "shoulders" are changed, but the rest of the legs are pretty much the same minus the piston running down the side and the colors. It's like they made it from an incomplete picture, which is how the very best Kenner figures got made. (For the record, I'm talking about the Class of 1979 - the Cantina Aliens, Power Droid, Boba Fett, X-Wing Luke, and Death Star Droid. In the words of the great Carly Simon "nobody does it better," baby.) 

You get an R2-D2 style body sticker and everything. Hasbro may have made it a tad too good - the extra paint on the dome for the black and blue eyes, plus a yellow stripe and a beige dish seems generous additions to a sparse style of figure. The dark leg also has some subtle gray paint on it that seems like a luxury - but he's a tiny guy.   Hasbro probably had some budget left to trick this guy out a bit. Everything is molded in color, so from where I sit this seems like a very Kenner-flavored take on the character. I believe this is close to how Kenner would have done it, and it feels and looks like a real 1980s toy.

It's figures like this that touch the spot in my brain that remembers what it was like to be playing with toys in my parents' house over 40 years ago. He feels like he could have been held by the Great Heep or just was part of some phantom toy line Kenner put out after Return of the Jedi. It's 100% what I want in a toy figure, and I would give it about as high of a recommendation as I can to anybody who buys Retro or Kenner-style action figures. If you were a Kenner kid, go buy this. $12, $20, whatever - just get it. And Hasbro, if you're reading, please don't give up on this format. 10 or 12 new figures a year is perfect (I know we got more in 2023, no complaints) so keep them coming.

Commentary:  It's different!  This color-change C1 Astromech is Disney's superior C1-10P "Chopper" [FOTD #2,385] with deco changes and lacking the alternate "wrong" leg.  The deco is closer to the Hasbro Chopper figure, plus an added color-change figure.  You'll like this one.

The figure has a removable central leg, head-arms with 3 joints each, plus each leg has an articulated ankle.   What's more, the arm in the body also swings out - there's a lot going on with this mold.  Disney dropped some deco on the back of the figure, but that isn't something you're likely to miss.  You're unlikely to miss Chopper's crotch rocket either.

The reason you're going to buy this figure is for the color change.  (Unless you missed Chopper last time, in which case this 3 3/4-inch figure is still worthwhile.)   When heated, C1 looks like Chopper on the TV show Star Wars Rebels.   The yellow marks on the dome and body and mismatched leg all look like the show, giving kids another crack at a character that just plain didn't get love at US retailers.

When chilled, the feet and dome turn black.  It recalls the Imperial "disguise" Chopper got on the TV show, but it's not the same pattern or the same colors.  It may serve as "close enough" for young fans, and it's certainly better than nothing.  If you like what you see, I'd say grab it.  It's a neat set and a nice feature, and who the heck knows when you can go to a theme park again to buy yourself one.

Commentary:  Essential!   I didn't think Chopper (C1-10P) as a smaller droid could carry his weight as a figure.   I assumed Hasbro wouldn't shove enough plastic in the box to warrant the price of a standard figure.  I was wrong.  This is fantastic.   Hasbro's "realistic" take on Chopper from Rebels seems almost the same as the cartoon.   It also looks a bit like the full-size droid from Rebels Recon, although it's a bit lighter and a little less filthy.  Every element is where it should be, from the weird alternate leg to the panels that look glued on in the wrong place.  Some of the colors are a smidgen off, like the chassis body being lighter grey on the toy than the TV show, or the orange stripe over the chest arm being yellow rather than orange, but I'm picking nits here.  This is pretty gorgeous and I'm not going to dump on it for taking license on translating a cartoon character to a movie-compatible one.

The toy is positively loaded in moving parts.  The central leg is removable - you can elect to leave it out, or use a rocket leg, or a wheel leg.  The hips and ankles move, and the left leg can be replaced with a leg that better matches the right one if you're so inclined - a nice nod to an episode of the show where Chopper wants to get his leg fixed.  The dome rotates, as does the dish on top.  What surprised me was the leg in the body swivels out, as do the arms inside the dome.  Each arm has at least two joints, and there are ball joints on the head arms' elbows.

The colors largely match the TV show, with bright oranges and yellows against a sea of muted greys and greens.  I love how it turned out, complete with the blue dots inside the two remaining eyes.  The wires were painted, and so were tons of other details.  Hasbro even painted wear and tear on the figure's backside, and that's something we don't get very much.

Kudos to Hasbro for including environmental pieces.  The clear orange "blast" pieces work as a great display sand for the figure, making Yoda and R2-D2 seem like they need to up their game on the gear front.  A little white smoke paint dusts the blast, making it a pretty fantastic piece for a display shelf or desk.  If you already have the other Rebels figures, you'll be happy to get this one.   I should also note Ezra is a stunner.  Make sure you add these to your stash before the prices get stupid expensive - I assume Rebels kids will get older and want these eventually.  And be sure to get that Hondo from Galaxy's Edge while you're at it.

Commentary:  Well, I'm impressed.  Hasbro's take on this droid was simple, cheap, and impossible to find for long.  Disney decided to make their own deluxe version of C1-10P "Chopper" for their theme parks and it's streets ahead of Hasbro's model.  They both seem to have come from a similar data file for reference, but the colors, articulation, and features are significantly different.   This one does stuff.

Hasbro's model was good for the price - it was about $4.99 when you could find it, and had 3 joints with no accessories or gimmicks.  If Hasbro could keep to that price point, that kind of figure is a perfectly good product for the masses.  Disney decided to do a much more expensive version, but packed so much into it that you're going to want it.  The orange is deeper, and there are many more paint operations on the body - front and back.  Panels are painted which Hasbro ignored. Rivets and vents have color and dimension, wires are decorated, and that little crater at the bottom of his canister body has been painted.

Nearly every moving piece pops off.  If you want to do matched legs, you can.  If you want a mismatched leg like on the first three seasons of the show, you can.  The body has a detailed array of mechanical bits under his dome, and you can remove the arms or radar dish if you like.  You've got options.  The arms not only rotate, but bend at the elbows and wrists.  If you want to remove them, you can store them inside his droid dome.  These things are the very definition of small parts/choke hazard, so I'd very strongly recommend buying an extra one in case you or your kid decide to eat a part.  (Don't do this.)

Each leg of the four included have rolling wheels, save for the rocket leg.  That's the only part that feels as if it comes up short, simply because it doesn't have a flame piece to plug in or some other gadget or color to really send it to the next level.  This is just me whining, because this is a gorgeous droid with more panels, parts, and pieces than anything Hasbro has given us in the 3 3/4-inch size in a few years.  You can even flip out the claw arm in its chest.  I'm amazed they included the spare "matching" leg from "The Forgotten Droid."  Or so I assume - for all I know it's a spoiler and he gets a replacement in a future episode.  Either way, I appreciate the foresight to include it in case I or some kid wanted it for whatever reason.

With things like articulated ankles and rolling wheels, this is a figure that is going to make anyone who waited to see if Hasbro did a better Chopper just cave in and buy this one.   It's not merely kinda better, this would be a top-notch release had Hasbro thrown it on a The Black Series or The Vintage Collection cardback.  It's well worth the $13, and I'd even go as far as to say a reasonable premium isn't so bad as to avoid the Theme Park Tax.   Look, I hate scalpers as much as the next guy, but plane tickets, parking, admission, and time off work are expensive.  If you can scare this one up at a reasonable price and you love either droid toys or Star Wars Rebels you won't be sorry.  You'll also wonder what else Disney can do if left to their own devices to do 3 3/4-inch toys without Hasbro.   This take on Chopper is expressive and packed with about as many features as I would consider to be reasonable, and then some.   I'm impressed, I'm genuinely impressed.
