Commentary:
Sometimes low expectations can bring a good surprise! After three releases - the regular individual figure, the SDCC exclusive variant package debut, and another release in a Target-exclusive 3-pack with a unique Death Trooper and Cassian Andor - I did not expect nor did I want another Jyn Erso. For the fifth anniversary of Rogue One, Hasbro did an online exclusive series of figures to celebrate with the photoreal face paint - and it's good. It's breathtakingly good. And when you pick up the 2016 releases and compare them, you will learn just how precious and sentimental you are about your old toys. I'd never toss out an old 3 3/4-inch Luke figure from the 80s or 90s (or I assume 00s.) But the 2016 Jyn Erso, I got no reason to ever look at her again. This new one is remarkable.

I've got a few figures to open still, but this one I opened within minutes of the box arriving from work. And I ran back to get my 2016 Erso to compare - and it's amazing. Old Jyn Erso figures were pumped out due to a large demand for Rey being unmet during the movie launch, and they sold well - and I assume long-term collectors will get rid of them after seeing the new release.

If you have the old figure, this one is virtually the same with a new head and some tiny improvements. First, there's the face - printing her face on here completely changes the figure's entire personality. I'm know giving side-eye to all my original trilogy humans because I assume this means upcoming Leia reissues are going to look amazing, and maybe it means we'll get some really good Han Solo and Luke figures at some point. The picture says it all. Less obvious are minor improvements on her outfit - the zippers and buckles are now a shinier silver rather than a dull grey. The brown boots are a little richer. The badge on her vest near the waist is a bit cleaner, but still not perfect ias far as I can tell.

I used to think The Black Series was a line where latecomers got screwed out of awesome things as the line goes as Hasbro seemed very hesitant to bring anything back as new fans discovered the line - and lately we've seen them reissue the Carbonite Block and Salacious Crumb from SDCC (Amazon and Disney parks, respectively) as well as some other great things. Now that we're seeing good figures improved to the nth degree, I'd almost say it's worth skipping any main character that looks like it could use some help. We've seen photo real upgrades on so many main characters that it's hard to say no to some of them once you see it in person. Get her if you're so inclined, just prepare by selling your old ones while you still can. And you probably can't. They'll just want the new one.

Commentary:  This is the least essential figure in the new movie's line.  Jyn Erso returns - much like new versions of Kylo Ren and Rey during Rogue One - because the home video is out, kids are still seeing it, and fans may want the movie's lead character roughly 11 months after the film's release.   These lines are planned 18 months before release sometimes, so that means Hasbro assumed the marketplace needed a new Jyn Erso figure - and as such, they gave you one very similar to the last version with minor batch changes and added Force Link elements.  (There's a chip inside her, and a blue marker on the sole of her retooled boot.)

The figure is basically the same colors, but a bit lighter.  The face is a but more muted, with lighter skin and lighter features.  The green and brown of her costume aren't as dark, and the copyright information was moved from the boots to the back of the scarf.  (I applaud this move.)   The original blaster was more silver, this new one is more grey.  The first one had better detailing and was more opaque, so both her face and blaster suffer a tiny bit from translucent plastic sucking the detail out.  It's by no means bad - it's just that if you have a previous release I doubt you will also need this one.  For completists and Force Link fans only... unless you missed the previous release (three times over), in which case get it with my blessing.

Force Link Notes: "Rebellions are built on hope."  "Escort is headed your way."     "Okay, on my lead."  Blaster sounds.  "We can stop them."  Possibly more - it was a little unresponsive.

Commentary:  When I first saw Forces of Destiny stuff, my reaction was "Oh, neat. This isn't for me."   I still feel the same way - I bet there's a lot of success here because Hasbro usually dropped the ball with women in all of its action figure lines (ditto Kenner, Toy Biz, Mattel, etc.) during my lifetime.   The female-focus is a great start, but where do you go from there?  Men, of course.   Oh well.  Jyn Erso was part of the line's debut, which I wish took place a year ago rather than after that movie's time in the sun ended.   This adventure doll was designed to do what dolls don't - stand.  This figure stands better than many 3 3/4-inch and 6-inch action figures I own, which is remarkable when you consider this is a feat even Barbie can't accomplish.

Her hair in the front is stiff, and there was a weird fastener going through her hair into her head in the packaging.  I couldn't remove it, so all I could do was push it under the hairline.  (I didn't like it.  It disturbed me.)   Her hair looks a little weird out of the box, but maybe I could glue it down or something.  The face is a decent likeness of Felicity Jones in doll form, and the costume has cloth elements like a vest and a scarf.  The boots are separate rubbery pieces which look potentially removable, but I'm not going to mess with it.  Her belt has a working holster and removable blaster, plus she has a cool baton to club people.

If you squeeze her legs she does this twist-and-bash action that's kind of fun, but it's a little soft.   It's better than many features on smaller toys for boys, though, so I give Hasbro credit for making something that kids may enjoy regardless of gender.  (But time shall tell if there will be a "doll" stigma.)
While the figure is well-engineered with a pleasant design and surprisingly good articulation for the price - the same as a 6-inch The Black Series figure - I don't think I'm going to go all-in on the 11-inch adventure figure format.   I might pick and choose, but as a too-old collector who came up during the original trilogy I'm just not really feeling any new scale of figures.   I just want to stick with 3 3/4-inch and possibly 6-inch until it becomes a burden.     It's a decent product and I'd advise you buy one for yourself just to try it out, or better yet, buy one for a child in your life and play with theirs.   I'd love to see this line take off and grow, but due to size, space constraints, and the fact I already have many other Jyn Erso figures I wouldn't call it essential.  It is good, but all I want is something else.   If this line launched with something I didn't already own as a toy in multiple sizes, I think I'd be more excited for the form factor.

Collector's Notes: Hasbro's PR firm sent this sample to Galactic Hunter HQ, we decided to review it.

Commentary: Another Jyn Erso!  This one comes in the Imperial Ground Crew [FOTD #2,283] disguise, and as far as I can tell they share the same body.   The neck pegs seem to be the same size, and the hands and shoes are also seemingly identical.   Jyn's boots are brown, the Guard's are black.  Jyn has fingerless brown gloves with painted flesh fingers, while the Ground Crew has black gloves.   Other deco differences are minimal, but you'll notice two on the body.  Jyn's neck is flesh colored as opposed to black, and the backpack on Jyn has two very small red lights painted on the back that my Ground Crew figure lacks.   It's a nifty reuse of parts and pieces.

The disguised Jyn Erso is a fantastic figure - it's just as good as the Ground Crew but has the added bonus of a rocket-firing gun that's too heavy for her plus a wonderful head sculpt with a really nice paint job.  (Warning/guarantee: few action figure heads this small hold up to scrutiny under bright lights and a macro lens.)  The batons are pretty much the same, and the helmet lacks the open eye area we got to see in the movie.  I'd love to have seen that open window, but oh well.  At least you can use this figure as an army builder or infiltrator on the playset some customizer will undoubtedly make for you at some point.

This is a great example of foresight on Hasbro's part, squeezing two figures from a single mold with just a bit of planning.  I think.  If they're different molds, they fooled me so far.   I'd love to see them do the same with an Imperial Officer Cassian Andor some day, but for now I'm going to be very happy Hasbro made Jyn in the disguise.   It seems movie windows are getting shorter and shorter in nearly every brand and license in the Hasbro catalog, so seeing three or four waves of figures and rarely do we get this much variety in costumes of a movie's hero in this short of time.  Seriously - we got four different enough to be interesting costume changes for Jyn!  That's pretty wild.   So far I've only seen her show up online, but if you see her in stores go grab it.  It's cool.  Heck, order it online if you dare, it's cool.

Commentary:  What, another Jyn Erso?  Yup!  Ain't nobody able to accuse Hasbro of not making the female lead this time - or last time, the key difference is that this time Jyn Erso got more-than-equal treatment.  If you have a lead in a big movie, packing everybody equally is bad for the popular characters in the perception of the marketplace - and so Jyn Erso's got a ton of cool figures available right now and more are on the way in the mail to me as of my writing this.  For better or for worse, this one is a Walmart exclusive - and man alive, I hate Hasbro's The Black Series program.  If this thing were on a vintage cardback people would be losing their minds, because it's a great figure with cool accessories at a good price.  I can't imagine you not liking it.   It's a slightly different version of the previous "Jedha" version, but the Black Series version loses the scarf and green jacket.  It's different!

I assume all the repacks are subsidizing figures like this one.   26 points of articulation, a loose vest and holster, and a three-piece weapon make this a figure more in line with Hasbro's better G.I. Joe efforts than with Star Wars.  You can be - and should be - frustrated it's not getting wider distribution.  Jyn has a good range of movement, with everything you could want short of bend-and-swivel wrists - they're just swivel wrists.  Her ankles aren't rockers either, but they're still quite good and she's able to hold her sniper rifle with both hands if you're so inclined.  What I really love, though, are the thigh-swivels - these are necessary improvements on these figures.   This allows the figures to have hips that swing forward better, so the figures fit better in vehicles.  It's wonderful, and I hope Hasbro deploys them on every new 3 3/4-inch release in the super-articulated segment.

Deco is good - but it was already good.  The face seems a little more alive, and to my regular eyes the face paint seems to be an improvement.  I love the fingerless gloves, I love the bots, and the working holster?  Dynamite.   The decision to leave out the jacket - consistent with her Yavin appearance - helps make this figure a little different from the other release.

I like the regular version of Jyn Erso (Jedha) [FOTD #2,301], but this super-deluxe model looks more lively.  And, of course, it's barely different in terms of the costume itself.  The vest being sculpted separately and open gives her an illusion of motion, and the joints... well,  you get more personality with a figure given good articulation.  The basic version feels like a good action figure, and this one feels like a better action figure.  Get both if you can swing it - but get this one if you can only afford one of them.

Commentary:  Hey kids, it's another Jyn Erso!  Hasbro anticipated that people might actually want to buy the heroes of a movie regardless of who they are, so we're getting more than a few this time.  (I'd say releasing three 6-inch packaged versions of her same Jedha outfit is too many, but I digress.)   This one mixes things up with new accessories, a swell poncho, and a giant rock.  Who doesn't love a nice rock?

With nearly 30 points of articulation, Hasbro did a great job here - the legs have all sorts of great surprises like boot cut joints, the hands have bend-and-swivel wrists, and you've even got a breathing mask.  I don't think she used it on-screen, but you do get her cool baton which can hang off her poncho.   Her blaster can be stored on the belt, and the helmet fits perfectly on her head.  I didn't even realize it was removable at first.   It all fits together nicely, but it's quite dark and murky.  This is realistic and sensible for rain costuming for a war movie, but as a toy shelf goes it can get a little bland.  It's the perfect pastiche of new and old Rebel gear, but it blends in on my desk a little too well.  The two-tone poncho is divine, the face deco is exquisite, and in the immortal words of Carrie Fisher, "it's a hat."

The rocky Eadu base looks like it should connect to something, but what? And when?  It wouldn't surprise me if a trooper, a Galen Erso, or a repack of Cassian came out later to connect to the rocky cliff base.  I hope this doesn't happen - I'd rather get something new.  It's brown, it's dark, and she has to stand awkwardly to be posed on it.  It's a nice accessory, but if it had been left out I doubt you'd miss it.  The snow Starkiller Base bases didn't do anything for me either.

As the first time Kmart got a figure exclusive that - so far - seems to actually be exclusive, this is pretty cool.  The extra pieces and weapons help to soften the $5 upcharge, although the Kmart-ness of it makes it a hassle to get - after all, they seem to be closing more every year.  Since the costume is unique to this set, I've got no reason to skip it - it's cool!  It doesn't break any new ground, and my expectation is that Hasbro will continue not really doing anything amazing in this space for quite some time.  It's good though - but until we see new features or materials deployed, all you need to know is if the deco and articulation are any good.  And they are.

Collector's Notes: I got mine from Kmart.

Commentary: Two waves, two Jyn Erso figures - and a third is on the way, presumably in wave 3 or 4.   Hasbro took a lot of heat for not cranking out a lot of Rey early on, and seemed to be allergic to the many-main-character bonanza we usually see in any decent toy line.   Even for the prequels, we tended to get a few Obi-Wan Kenobi figures pretty early on - and now we've got two Jyns without having really much of a clue as to what the story is yet.  Progress!   I assume more figures in more formats are coming, and I'm already looking at this be-scarfed figure as a 12-inch and a 6-inch figure in my home.  Do I need more?  No.  Will I buy more?  Probably.  I like this figure a ridiculous amount.

The first Jyn Erso figure is in an outfit we haven't seen in the marketing much, so it's easier to get more excited about this one. She has a scarf! (Why?) A rank!   A cool vest!   She looks Star Wars-y at this scale in a way that didn't trip my imagination in the larger size.  Weird.  After cracking this one open I ran back to some of my old vehicles and had her pilot the Side Gunner and some other non-movie vehicles - she seems to be right at home in that whole "early Empire" era when you lose the scarf and put her next to a robot and 500 other figures.  I don't know if the hair and skin coloring as a toy are perfect, but the proportions seem good and she has no problems standing or carrying her ridiculously large shoulder-mounted rocket launcher.  Hasbro did a nice job here - finding the center of gravity can be tough, but by gum they did it.  Her smaller blaster fits fine in her fist or holster, making it the must-have Stormtrooper-killing accessory of the season.

I should also note that her scarf is easily removed.  The rocket-firing weapon looks like it was meant to rest on her shoulder, but it doesn't have to do this to remain upright.   It's neat.  Kids should dig it.

Her pose is normal - I daresay bland and vintage-esque as far as modern figures go - which really does make her feel like a modern retro figure.  Textures on her outfit are pretty flat, lacking the cloth-like feel you saw on some The Force Awakens toys - but there are layers.  Oh, there are layers - a vest, jacket, and shirt cover her body with a hint of an undershirt.  And gloves.  And each garment is painted a distinctive color.     There are even decorated code cylinders and buttons, plus stripes, giving her a fairly ornate look despite visually coming off as being overly decorated.  This is an ideal figure minus articulation and simple things like painted boot soles - which, well, I assume they wouldn't cause more figures to be sold.   You're buying this figure because you want this character in this outfit, and for the time being can't find the super-articulated version which at press time is unavailable.   (I'm betting on December.)    For seven or eight bucks this is one of my favorite new figures, and odds are she'll be around thanks to both of her costumes being sold at two per carton so far.  Grab one if you see it - or get one next year in a 4-pack, or with the AT-ACT in a few weeks.

Commentary: Here we are a year later, and Rogue One launches right now.  It's not a lot different from The Force Awakens other than there's less of it, and smarter case ratios, like doubling up on this one.  The packaging for Jyn Erso is just like the rest, basically The Force Awakens with its difficulty to read and complete and total lack of co-sells.  Each figure exists in a void, with no real information about the movie or the fact that it's a part of a greater collection.   As the packaging in the old days served as a marketing tool for the entire line, it seems a crying shame that giant warning labels, 4 languages of copy, and a giant graphic for an app I'll never download take up valuable real estate that probably won't help foster another generation of collectors.  There's no call to action or anything to make kids ask for that next figure.   In short - I hate it. I hope it works,  but it seems dark and murky and uninviting.

The figure itself?  Yeah, you'll want one.  It's not what I expected, but it's neat.  The vest is a separate rubbery piece which you can slide off, provided you remove her arms and head, so don't do that.   A blaster fits perfectly in either hand, which I should add are swivel-jointed.   That's right - seven points of articulation!  (But, so far, only on this specific figure.)  The breathing gear around her neck can be slid up and sort of fits around her face, which is pretty pale.  The paint job is adequate, but they're also doing more than older figures.  He's got a hat, goggles, lenses, eyes, lips, hair, and more painted - there's so much going on here that it opens the window to get more things wrong.   She has painted bandoliers, fingerless gloves, shoes, and more - the ambition was there. The factory did a pretty good job, too, but it's not perfect and I hope you get a good look at her in person before picking up yours.

Her small blaster is perfect, and the bigger gun is better than the "Combine" weapons last year.  It's basically a big bazooka which she can hold in her hand and fits well over her shoulder.  If you pose her right, she can even hold it and remain standing - that's no small feat!  Especially for such small feet.   I like it in the sense that it works well, and she can hold it while standing.   I'd also be very happy if they removed it to get the cost down to $5.99, but of course I would.  That's what matters to me.

The 6-inch figure had some coloring issues in the skin as well, so this one isn't worse.   If you get in real close you'll see where things aren't painted quite right, but most of it is done quite well and Hasbro is painting more things than we usually see on a costume at this size.   With The Force Awakens I felt a bit more compelled to say "This is great, buy it" but in this case we already know at least two more opportunities to get a Jyn this size are coming - maybe more - so I'd say you could probably wait.   I doubt we'll see this specific outfit again at this size, at least in the near future, so get her if you like the costume.   I'm not sure I love it - I like it - but the next version of Jyn Erso is sort of the action figure of your dreams.  Assuming you dream of 1980, and I do.   I'd say if you see this version of Jyn Erso this week, and you've got a few bucks, snag one.  I don't think I like it as much as the debut Rey last year, but it's not like I think I even saw this outfit prior to the toy anyway.

Commentary: Hasbro seems to have found a good groove on its The Black Series exclusives for "sneak preview" figures.   Last year we got a Stormtrooper with an art book, this year we get Jyn Erso with 4 oversized art cards.  If you want the figure early?  Here she is!  If you want every package variant?  Here ya go.  If you just want the figure, wait a few weeks, and you'll be covered.   Having seen precious little from the movie - seriously, not much at all - I can pretty much only talk about this figure in the context of the trailer and other figures.  Which, well, let's do that.   Taking design cues from recent big movies and the fashions of the late 1970s and today, Lucasfilm engineered a look that should resonate while we all wait to see how people like the character.  The trailer gives us a character who seems to borrow a grey shirt of the title character in 1977's Annie Hall, an overall fashion sense comparable to Katniss Everdeen with her fingerless gloves and military surplus-adjacent coloring (I was just at an exhibition for the Hunger Games movie last week), plus the scarf.  I'm guessing the design is all intentional and the disparate elements were indeed done to invoke a number of heroes and recent icons in popular culture, because it's not like Star Wars has a lot of women to draw upon.   Just a couple.  And I doubt Kea Moll hair and outfits would mean anything to the young audience they're trying to woo nowadays, so her look makes sense given the stuff I'm assuming they're trying to evoke.   Or it's just in my imagination.

The scarf, OK, I find this strange because I don't understand fashion - but a few years ago scarves suddenly seemed to flare up all over the place.  Sonic had one.  Link had one.  Why?  WHY?   I don't know why she has one either, unless it's chilly, and I don't know the climate on the planet(s) on which she will wear this costume just yet.   As an accessory I quite like it, because it's also a hood and that mixes up how the figure actually looks, rather than seeming to be a garment that exists just to demonstrate whatever new physics a game developer came up with.  It's here, it's grey, it's unpainted, it's OK.  I'm just seeing a lot of scarves in franchises that never had scarves before.  I don't understand it, and it scares me.
Her blaster pistol is small, black, and silver.  It fits in her hands flawlessly, and you can slide it right in her holster which has a tab to "lock" the gun in place.  A+, would approve of again.

I'm mostly impressed by the figure itself, what with boot cuts and bend-and-swivel wrists.   I'm counting 29 points of articulation, granting me a figure that's mostly on par with last year's 6-inch offerings for the last new movie.  The various textures look great, and I am largely pleased with the coloring.  We don't have painted soles on her boots or anything too fancy, but the blue pants don't run in to the brown boots.  The zipper is painted, there's a little badge on her brown and green sculpted vest, and all of the pieces fit together visually and functionally.   Coming up with new 1977-era Star Wars isn't easy and were it not for the scarf, I'd say this is believably something that might be worn on Yavin IV, somewhere out of the range of the camera.

I am not overly familiar with the works of one Felicity Jones, so I'm working off press images and trailers - and I'd say it's OK.  Hasbro clearly got their sculptors doing a good job here, but the hair color, facial expression, and paint remind me a smidgen of The Hunger Games once more - the hair is, clearly, different.  This is clearly not Jennifer Lawrence.  But I'd be willing to bet if you took this figure up to someone who only vaguely knew the property and said "Here's your new Katniss" they'd say "Oh sure, looks good."   I'm not thrilled with the skin plastic, as it's a little too translucent and seems to be very soft on detail.  Compared to recent Marvel Legends or last year's Rey figures, Hasbro can do a bit more to make a face pop - this one seems to recede a bit.  The pink lips don't pop too much, the nose fads in, and the painted eyes and eyebrows look magnificent.  In many respects, it's doll-like - certain features are exaggerated while others aren't.

I like this figure - but I don't love it.   If Hasbro painted the skin on the face, rather than molded it, I bet it'd be fantastic - but as it is, it's just OK.  The outfit is translated nicely, the expression matches the trailers,  and while I could be completely full of nonsense this costume feels amazingly engineered to hit certain points in a pop culture junkie's brain - from numerous eras.      As an added bonus, four photo cards are included.  They're nice, but much like the booklet last year I would ask what purpose they serve.  They're neat, sure, but once you look at them they're too big to fit in trading card sheets and too small to frame.   You can look forward to losing them, or just move on and buy the regular retail release of Jyn Erso and forget they exist.  They're very nice photos, and would make an excellent ad or banner somewhere, but as a physical object don't do much for me.

Collector's Notes: I got this one at the show.  At press time she's quite expensive on eBay but I suspect prices will dip when the regular retail version hits stores in a few weeks.
